Listen

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered an immediate ceasefire between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities following renewed clashes that reportedly claimed five lives and resulted in the destruction of property.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Awka, on Wednesday, October 7, Soludo directed security agencies to maintain a round-the-clock presence in the affected communities and ensure the cessation of hostilities. He condemned the violence, saying the loss of lives and destruction of property were unacceptable, while pledging that the government would remain committed to justice and lasting peace.

The governor also condemned the destruction of the Idigo Palace in Aguleri and described the attack on the traditional institution as an assault on the state’s heritage. He announced that the government would assist in rebuilding the palace and also established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to examine petitions, complaints and historical grievances connected to the crisis, with the commission expected to submit its report within four months.

Stakeholders at the meeting agreed on an immediate ceasefire, prosecution of those responsible for the violence, accountability by community leaders and reconstruction of the destroyed palace. The meeting ended with representatives of the affected communities committing to peace, reconciliation and harmonious coexistence, while retired Justice Charles Okaa urged the government to enforce the 1982 Supreme Court judgment on the boundary dispute between Umueri and Aguleri.
