Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Chairman of the UN Fifth Committee, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, has called for continuous reform of the United Nations, saying institutional changes should not end with the current UN80 initiative.
Ibrahim made the call after presiding over the opening meeting of the Fifth Committee for the 81st General Assembly session. He said several member states raised the need for sustained institutional improvement, with discussions expected to cover reform, accountability, efficiency and the structure of the organisation.
He also stressed the importance of trust and accountability, saying the transition to a new UN Secretary-General should not interrupt the reform process.
The Fifth Committee is responsible for the UN’s administrative and budgetary matters, making its work central to how the organisation manages resources and funds its operations.
