The Cross River Police Command has confirmed one death after a tanker overturned and caught fire opposite the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat.

Police spokesman, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, in a preliminary update on Sunday, October 4, said the tanker was involved in a road traffic accident before overturning and bursting into flames. He said the driver, who was reportedly trapped in the vehicle, was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.

Eitokpah said the fire spread to nearby shops and buildings, with several vehicles also affected. Police officers from Odukpani Division were deployed to secure the area and prevent further harm, while the Fire Service was alerted to contain the blaze.

The police urged residents and motorists to stay away from the scene and allow emergency responders unhindered access. The command said further updates would be issued as verified information became available.
