BURKINA FASO, NIGERIA SEEK STRONGER ECONOMIC AND SECURITY COOPERATION

Listen

Burkina Faso has described Nigeria as a “natural partner” and major African player, calling for stronger economic, security and development cooperation between the two countries.

Burkinabè Foreign Affairs Minister Karamoko Traoré made the call in a statement issued on Friday, October 2nd, in connection with Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration in Ouagadougou. He said longstanding ties between both countries extended beyond government relations to families, businesses, universities and communities, urging increased trade, production and opportunities for young people.

Traoré also called for the fourth session of the Nigeria-Burkina Faso Joint Cooperation Commission to be convened as soon as possible to review bilateral commitments, update priorities and establish an implementation timeline. He said Burkina Faso remained committed to dialogue with Nigeria based on respect for sovereignty and legitimate interests.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Syndoph Endoni, called for stronger cooperation against terrorism, violent extremism, human trafficking, arms and drug trafficking, migrant smuggling and cybercrime. He advocated intelligence sharing, border cooperation, joint training and professional exchanges, while also urging expanded trade, investment, food and energy security and greater protection for citizens of both countries.
