The United Nations and African Union have reaffirmed support for former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo’s efforts to help prevent renewed conflict in Ethiopia and bring the parties back to direct talks.
Obasanjo, who serves as the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa, played a leading mediation role in the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement between Ethiopia’s federal government and Tigrayan forces.
The UN and AU are urging all sides to exercise restraint and resolve outstanding disputes through dialogue under the peace agreement. The AU has also asked Obasanjo to urgently engage the parties as tensions continue to rise in northern Ethiopia.
