Abdulmumin Jimoh has retained his Division A title at the 2026 Lekki Scrabble Club Classics, winning the trophy and the $1,000 top prize at the two-day tournament in Lagos.
Jimoh defeated a strong field of more than 200 players at the Peninsula Hotel, Lekki, to secure the title for the second consecutive year. He dedicated the victory to his late elder brother, who introduced him to Scrabble, and said his next target was the African Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia, in October.
Frank Ishiekwene won Division B, while Abdulsalam Toyyibaht emerged champion of the Under-12 category. The 2026 edition also featured a children’s division, with organisers and stakeholders highlighting the importance of introducing young players to the game.
Lekki Scrabble Club President Samuel Anikoh said the fifth edition marked a significant milestone, attracting participants from Nigeria and countries including Ghana, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. He called for greater corporate support, particularly for the development of Scrabble in schools.
Nigeria Scrabble Federation President Bright Idahosa described the tournament as an event of international standard and said the federation was working to expand its Scrabble-to-School initiative. He noted that the Lekki competition would also provide useful preparation for the African championship, where Nigerian players will seek to maintain the country’s strong continental record.
