Fresh communal violence in Geroji settlements, Mbamnga Ward of Sardauna Local Government Area, Taraba State, has reportedly left about 340 houses burnt and displaced more than 1,000 people, mainly women and children.
The three-day clash between Mambilla and Fulani communities began on Sept. 16, 2026, with several settlements, including Wuro Buba, Wuro Ardo Bashiru, Wuro Wakili Idrisa and Wuro Saleh Petel, among those badly affected. Some residents reportedly fled to neighbouring Cameroon and nearby communities, while several people were reported missing.
Community leader, Ardo Bashiru, said cattle and sheep were also killed or rustled during the violence, while food stocks and other sources of livelihood were destroyed. He appealed for urgent assistance, particularly as the rainy season continues.
Sardauna Local Government Council Chairman, Mohammed Umar, confirmed the crisis, saying it began after a confrontation between a Mambilla woman and a Fulani man on a farm. He said security personnel had been deployed to the affected areas and that arrangements were underway to repatriate refugees who fled to Nyang in Cameroon.
Chief of Mbamnga, Abubakar Saleh, appealed for calm, noting that the communities had lived together peacefully for decades. The authorities and community leaders called for support for the resettlement, rehabilitation and reintegration of displaced residents, while efforts continue to prevent further violence.
