The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained a 25-year-old businessman at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu, for allegedly attempting to traffic cocaine to Portugal.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the suspect, who recently got married, was intercepted on Sept. 25 while attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal via Addis Ababa. He was placed under excretion observation and subsequently expelled 72 wraps of cocaine. The agency said preliminary investigations indicated that he had previously operated a car decoration business in Lagos before relocating to Portugal in 2023.
Babafemi also reported several other operations across the country, including the seizure of 2.55 million opioid pills weighing 1,640.55kg at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. In Bauchi, operatives recovered 262.5kg of cannabis concealed in a truck, while two cannabis farms in Edo were destroyed, with an estimated yield of 1,360.23kg.
In Lagos, NDLEA operatives recovered 3.4kg of cannabis from two suspects in Mushin and arrested another suspect at Ebute-Ero with cannabis, pentazocine injections, nitrazepam tablets and tramadol pills. Two Togolese nationals were also arrested in Oyo with 305.6kg of cannabis, while five suspects were apprehended at the Seme border with 420 cartons of nitrous oxide weighing 1,688.4kg.
NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa commended the officers involved and urged personnel to sustain the agency’s balanced drug-control efforts.
