Young Nigerians seeking careers in technology have been advised to combine artificial intelligence (AI) skills with strong knowledge of specific industries to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
Digital experts gave the advice on Sunday, September 27, during a virtual ICT Career Talk organised by Bincom Dev Centre, with the theme, “Agentic AI: The Next Frontier of Tech Careers.” Engineer and Founder of SurfSpot Communications Ltd., Akohamen Agenmonmen, and IT project and product management professional, Quazim Ogungbayi, were the featured speakers.
Agenmonmen explained that while generative AI mainly creates content in response to prompts, agentic AI can plan and execute sequences of tasks within defined limits. He identified emerging opportunities in AI orchestration, workflow engineering, AI-native software development, safety and governance, and industry-specific applications, while stressing the importance of human oversight.
Ogungbayi advised aspiring AI professionals to start with simple automated workflows before advancing to more autonomous systems. He encouraged learners to devote about 90 days to focused learning and practical application, while developing skills in APIs and workflow design. Both experts also stressed the importance of data privacy, access controls, audit trails and human review as AI systems become more integrated into sensitive operations.
