Vice President Kashim Shettima has said Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council undermines the fairness and legitimacy of the global governance system.
Shettima stated this during a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for urgent reforms that would make the global body more representative, responsive and credible.
The Vice President commended UN Secretary-General António Guterres for supporting permanent African representation on the Security Council, stressing that global decisions should reflect contemporary geopolitical and demographic realities. He urged greater commitment to international law and the protection of human dignity amid conflicts, hunger and instability. He said Nigeria would continue to support efforts to rebuild trust among nations and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
Shettima commended Amina Mohammed for her contributions to diplomacy and sustainable development, describing her service at the UN as a source of pride to Nigeria. Mohammed, in response, expressed appreciation to Nigeria and the administration of President Bola Tinubu for their support for the UN and her work as Deputy Secretary-General.
Shettima was accompanied by Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Hyacinth Alia of Benue, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers and Lawal Dauda of Zamfara, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim.
