The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) has warned fruit sellers against using carbide to artificially ripen fruits, stressing that the practice could expose consumers to harmful substances.
The council’s Executive Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, on Friday September 25, issued the warning after officials inspected the Kano fruits market, popularly known as “Yan Lemo”, at Na’ibawa, to assess compliance with directives against the practice.
Garba-Muhammad said the inspection was aimed at ensuring traders complied with corrective measures issued to protect consumers. He warned that appropriate action would be taken against anyone who refused to comply with the directive.
The Chairman of the ‘Yan Lemo Fruit Sellers’ Association, Malam Safiyanu Abdullahi, commended the council for the inspection and pledged the association’s cooperation in discouraging the use of harmful chemicals for fruit ripening.
Abdullahi also said the association would report any member found violating the directive to the council, while commending the state government and KSCPC for efforts to protect consumers from adulterated and harmful products.
