The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed claims of a security breach involving Nigerians’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) and other personal information, assuring citizens that their identity data remains safe and secure.
The commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on Wednesday September 23, said the claims followed a video circulating on social media alleging that Nigerians’ personal data had been exposed and offered for sale. He described the claims as misleading and urged Nigerians to disregard unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
Adegoke said NIMC had implemented measures to protect the National Identity Database and prevent unauthorised access. He also advised Nigerians to use only approved channels for NIN verification and other identity-related services.
The commission’s Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine whether any NIMC tokenisation verification agents breached their licensing agreements, either directly or through sub-licensees. She reaffirmed NIMC’s commitment to data protection and privacy, saying the commission would continue working with relevant stakeholders to safeguard Nigerians’ identity information.
