The body of Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of UNIZIK Primary School who was swept away by floodwaters in Awka, Anambra State, has been recovered.
Success was among schoolchildren and adults caught in the flood along the Nibo–Isiagu Road, popularly known as Ring Road, on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026. Police Safe School Operatives, working with community members, had earlier rescued nine people, including seven schoolchildren and two adults.
A family member described Success as a brave boy, saying he reportedly broke a vehicle window to create an escape route that enabled other occupants to get out. However, he was unable to reach safety.
Meanwhile, the other children rescued from the incident are reportedly in stable condition and receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Two other children from Success’s family who were also involved in the incident were rescued.
The incident occurred after heavy flooding submerged parts of the route, with videos from the scene showing commuters struggling to escape vehicles caught in the floodwaters. The recovery of Success’s body brings to a close the search for the missing pupil.
