Nigerian table tennis star Quadri Aruna made a winning debut for Amiens STT as the club defeated Lille 3-2 in the opening round of the French Pro B League. This was disclosed in a statement by the media department of the International Table Tennis Federation Africa (ITTF Africa) on Wednesday, September 23, in Lagos.
Playing at the Albéric-Labaume Gymnasium in Amiens, Aruna recovered from a difficult start to beat Iran’s Hossein Hodaei 3-1. His victory provided an important point for Amiens as the club begins its campaign for promotion to France’s top division.
Elsewhere, Nigerian table tennis legend Segun Toriola, who also serves as player-coach, guided Nantes to a 3-1 victory over Frejus AMSL. Algeria’s Mehdi Bouloussa also helped Courbevoie STT defeat Compiégnois TT 3-2, while fellow Algerian Stephane Ouaiche recorded a 3-0 win for Caen TTC.
Caen currently lead the standings after the opening round, with Amiens occupying third position. Other Nigerians, including Olajide Omotayo and Taiwo Mati, did not feature as Le Havre ATT defeated Boulogne Billancourt AC 3-1.
Aruna’s Amiens will next travel to face Toriola’s Nantes on Tuesday, Sept. 29, setting up an all-Nigerian clash as both teams seek to strengthen their promotion ambitions.
