Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after losing 1-0 to Colombia in their quarter-final match at the Władysław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź, Poland, on Sunday. Nigeria dominated possession and created several chances but could not find the breakthrough.
The Falconets had 58 per cent possession and recorded 14 shots compared with Colombia’s five. However, Nigeria was reduced to 10 players in the 77th minute after Kafayat Mafisere received a straight red card for a serious foul. Colombia capitalised in the second minute of added time when Valerin Loboa scored from a rebound after her initial effort was blocked by Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign after an impressive knockout-stage run that included a 3-0 victory over England in the round of 16. The Falconets had earlier beaten New Caledonia 10-1, drawn 0-0 with China and lost 0-2 to Spain in the group stage.
Acting NFF General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the players for their energy, determination and commitment, urging them not to be discouraged by the result. Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Chioma Ohakim, also commended the team, saying Nigerians in Poland were proud of their efforts despite the quarter-final defeat.
