Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) has successfully performed its first total hip replacement surgery, marking a major milestone in specialised healthcare delivery in the state.
The surgery was carried out on Saturday, September 19, on a young man living with sickle cell disease who developed avascular necrosis, a condition in which reduced blood supply causes bone tissue at the top of the thigh bone to die. The procedure was led by Dr Lawan Yari, alongside Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Mr Manasseh Jonah and Mr Karumi Ibrahim.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Gana, who disclosed the development on Sunday, described the procedure as a landmark achievement. He explained that total hip replacement involves replacing a damaged hip joint with an artificial joint and noted that the specialised procedure was previously unavailable in the state.
Gana attributed the achievement, as well as another major maxillofacial surgery performed at Yobe State Specialist Hospital in May, to Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s support for the health sector and investment in modern medical equipment.
