Brighton & Hove Albion handed English Premier League champions Arsenal their first defeat of the season with a convincing 3-0 victory at the south coast on Saturday, September 19, while Tottenham Hotspur suffered a third league defeat after losing 3-2 at home to Aston Villa.
Brighton, playing in a special blue kit to mark their 125th anniversary, took control of the match when Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Kostoulas doubled the advantage before half-time, while Andres completed the scoring in the second half. The victory lifted Brighton to 10 points, while Arsenal remained on 12, level with Manchester City.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described his side’s performance as disappointing, saying Brighton were a level above his team. “We were extremely poor technically and not respecting the game,” Arteta said. Manchester City can move within three points of Arsenal if they defeat Sunderland on Sunday.
Tottenham’s difficult start continued as Aston Villa secured a 3-2 victory in London. Johan Manzambi put Villa ahead in first-half stoppage time before Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia extended the lead. Tottenham’s Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul scored late goals, but could not prevent defeat, leaving Spurs with two points from five matches. In other results, Everton remained unbeaten after Thierno Barry’s goal secured victory over Ipswich, while Newcastle United defeated Hull City 2-1.
