The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned children, teenagers and young adults against using rolling skate shoes, wheeled footwear and similar recreational devices on public highways, citing the risk of serious road crashes and injuries.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, on Sunday September 20, said the use of wheeled footwear alongside moving vehicles, across carriageways or through traffic creates avoidable dangers. He noted that highways are unpredictable environments shared by motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Bakare-Oki urged parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to discourage children from skating on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes and other areas where vehicular traffic is permitted. He advised users to restrict skating activities to designated recreational areas, private compounds and other safe locations, while using helmets, knee and elbow pads and other protective equipment.
He also urged motorists to remain vigilant around children and young people, particularly in residential areas and school zones. Members of the public were encouraged to report crashes, dangerous traffic situations, road obstructions and other emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free short code 3367 for prompt intervention.
