Chinese cuisine is increasingly serving as a bridge between cultures, with its diverse flavours and communal dining traditions creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to connect and understand one another.
Kevin Zou, a tour guide with GZL Tours in China, said the country’s wide geographical spread had produced distinct culinary traditions shaped by regional history, environment and lifestyles. He identified Cantonese, Sichuan, Shandong and Jiangnan cuisines, including Shanghai, among the major traditions, each with its own flavours and preparation methods.
Zou said dishes such as Beijing roast duck and Cantonese roasted goose reflected China’s rich culinary heritage, while Sichuan hotpot had gained international popularity for its spicy flavour and communal dining experience. He explained that the traditional round dining table symbolised togetherness, allowing people to share different dishes and engage in conversation.
He said Chinese food could give foreigners an opportunity to learn about the country’s culture beyond cuisine, while creating an informal setting for interaction and relationship-building. Private chef Temitope Komolafe noted that Chinese cuisine was also becoming more accessible in Nigeria, saying culinary exchanges could help Nigerians and Chinese people appreciate each other’s food traditions, values and culture.
