The Ondo State Government has confirmed 48 deaths and 182 cases linked to the consumption of a local alcoholic drink suspected to be contaminated with methanol.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure, on Thursday September 17, saying the affected cases were recorded in Odigbo and Irele Local Government Areas. He said Irele had emerged as the latest flashpoint, with Idogun and Gbogunron communities affected.
Ajaka said urine samples from victims were pointing to suspected methanol poisoning, while investigations continued to determine the source of the substance. He said health authorities were working to identify the source and prevent further exposure in the affected communities.
The state government has strengthened its response through collaboration with NAFDAC, WHO, NDLEA, DSS, Police, Amotekun Corps and local government authorities. The multi-agency effort is focused on containing the incident, identifying the source of the suspected toxic substance and preventing further deaths.
