Large-scale war is increasingly being viewed as an immediate global risk, according to the UN Global Risk Report.
The report is based on responses from 1,300 people from government, international organisations, civil society, the private sector and academia across all regions of the world. Large-scale war rose 16 places in the rankings, recording the steepest rise among the 28 risks assessed.
About 36% of respondents believe the effects of a large-scale war could affect a significant share of humanity within a year, while 76% expect such an impact within seven years. The report also highlights geopolitical tensions, climate change, resource shortages, misinformation, artificial intelligence and weakening institutions.
The UN stressed that the findings represent perceptions of global risks, not predictions. Respondents identified stronger cooperation between governments as the most effective way to prevent and manage major risks.
