The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has suspended the industrial action it directed affiliates to undertake over the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos, following talks with the Federal Government.
TUC General Secretary, Nuhu Toro, announced the suspension after a meeting with Education Minister Tunji Alausa and other stakeholders in Abuja, on Monday September 14. He described the discussions as fruitful, saying the unions’ concerns had been addressed and a seven-member committee would now examine the issues surrounding the proposed management arrangement.
Toro stressed that the suspension was not a permanent withdrawal of the action, warning that the unions could resume it if dissatisfied with the committee’s recommendations. He said the parties would reconvene after the committee completes its two-week assignment, while also calling for urgent rehabilitation of King’s College to improve its learning environment.
Alausa, meanwhile, directed all Federal Unity Colleges to resume academic activities immediately. He assured workers that no staff member would be dismissed or punished over the arrangement and said their deployment would remain subject to the Public Service Rules.
The minister said the committee would review additional recommendations for possible inclusion in the agreement allowing the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) to continue managing the school, while the government remains committed to preserving the institution’s heritage and improving education.
