The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has raised alarm over increasing harassment, intimidation and prosecution of journalists by security agencies, warning that such actions could undermine press freedom and legitimate journalism in Nigeria.
In a communiqué issued in Abuja on Tuesday, September 15, after its Standing Committee meeting in Kano on Friday, September 11, the Guild urged governments and members of the public to respect press freedom and resolve complaints through constructive engagement. It specifically raised concerns over the use of cybercrime legislation and other laws against journalists, urging aggrieved parties to use the Media Ombudsman established by NPAN, NGE, NUJ and GOCOP rather than resorting to threats or violence.
The editors also called on the Federal and state governments to provide a level playing field for all political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. They urged INEC and other relevant agencies to ensure fairness and non-discrimination, while charging politicians to focus on issues, avoid inflammatory rhetoric and comply with campaign rules.
On the economy, the NGE urged the Federal Government to sustain its reforms while keeping Nigerians’ welfare at the centre of its policies. It also expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of federal roads and called for accelerated rehabilitation and reconstruction.
The Guild commended security agencies for gains against terrorism, banditry and other crimes, but called for sustained and coordinated efforts to achieve lasting peace and national unity.
