Nigeria and Murdoch University in Western Australia have agreed to deepen knowledge transfer and professional capacity building in the country’s solid minerals sector through an expanded mining training programme.
The partnership between the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the university has already trained two cohorts of 11 Nigerian officials each since its launch in June 2025. The programme combines technical, policy and leadership training with field visits, industry engagement, workshops and job-shadowing opportunities.
Discussions on the next phase were held on the sidelines of the Africa Down Under conference in Australia. The proposed third cohort will feature stronger industry immersion, live case studies, internships and training to help participants develop commercially viable and investor-ready mining opportunities.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, in the late hours of Sunday September 13, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, said the goal was not only to attract capital and technology but also to equip Nigerians with the expertise to deploy, manage and advance them. He said the expanded programme would help build professionals capable of contributing to exploration, project development, investment promotion, ESG compliance and downstream value addition.
