BRICS leaders have unveiled fresh initiatives in artificial intelligence, health, trade, transport and sustainable development at the 18th BRICS Summit Outreach session in New Delhi, with partner countries including Nigeria participating. India’s chairmanship is built around resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BRICS members agreed to establish an integrated system for responding to infectious disease outbreaks, share early-warning data during emergencies and strengthen logistics supply chains. Other initiatives include BRICS Connect for skills and employment, an SME cooperation portal and the BRICS Urban Future Forum on transport.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said intra-BRICS trade had reached US$1.2 trillion, with the bloc accounting for nearly a quarter of global exports. He said the New Development Bank had financed 123 projects worth almost US$40 billion, while Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed an open-access AI zone, large language model development, engineering talent programmes and youth science exchanges.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for stronger economic resilience through technology, human capital and diversified growth, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed the link between economic security, cooperation and sustainable development.
BRICS leaders earlier adopted the New Delhi Declaration at the summit, held in New Delhi from Sept. 12 to Sept. 13.
