Libyan security authorities have seized about 100,000 ecstasy pills bearing the image of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in a shipment allegedly smuggled from Europe. The drugs were intercepted at a Libyan port after security agents received intelligence about a plan to transport them by sea.
According to Al Rada for Combating Terrorism and Organised Crime, officers tracked the shipment to the port and discovered the pills concealed inside a cargo van. Several suspects have reportedly been handed over to prosecutors for further investigation.
Images released by the agency showed brown pills moulded in the shape of Gaddafi’s head and shoulders, with his facial features and distinctive clothing pressed into their surface. Authorities did not identify the European country from which the shipment originated.
The seizure comes amid growing concerns over Libya’s role as a transit hub for synthetic drugs and other narcotics. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime said prolonged instability since Gaddafi’s overthrow in 2011 has been exploited by drug trafficking networks, while the country remains politically divided between rival authorities in the west and east.
