The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Wing, has backed the suspension of resumption in all Federal Unity Colleges nationwide over the controversial concession of King’s College, Lagos. The union said its teachers would not resume until the issue was addressed.
NUT Federal Wing Chairman, Emeka Okonta, said the union wanted the Federal Government to clarify the agreement reached with King’s College alumni, insisting that public schools should not be conceded or privatised. He warned that allowing the arrangement could set a precedent for similar concessions in other Federal Unity Colleges.
The Joint Congress of Unions of the Federal Ministry of Education had earlier directed the suspension of resumption indefinitely and called for the reversal of the concession. The affected institutions include Federal Government Colleges, Federal Government Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges.
However, the Federal Government has directed that all Federal Unity Colleges resume on Sept. 14, assuring parents and students that adequate security arrangements have been made. Education Minister Tunji Alausa said security agencies had been alerted and would maintain heightened vigilance around the schools, urging parents to remain calm and prepare their children for resumption.
