President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the full payment of the cash rewards promised to members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic success at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket. Each player received the equivalent of $100,000, while officials received $50,000.
Tinubu disclosed this on Thursday, September 10, saying the payments completed the cash component of the reward package, which also includes national honours and three-bedroom houses in Abuja for the players and officials. He said the government fulfilled the commitments after completing the required processes.
The President said outstanding cash rewards for the Super Falcons were also being concluded, while players and officials had already received title documents for their house allocations and National Honours certificates. He added that the housing and national honours promised to the Super Eagles had also been redeemed.
Tinubu congratulated the athletes and reaffirmed his commitment to rewarding sporting excellence, saying Nigerian athletes who bring honour to the country deserve a government that keeps its promises. D’Tigress won a record fifth consecutive and seventh overall FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title in 2025.
