Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), on Thursday September 10, sensitised traders at a community market on diphtheria prevention, as part of efforts to strengthen awareness and reduce the spread of the disease.
Health Educator, Mrs Omoselewa Balogun, explained that diphtheria is a contagious bacterial infection that mainly affects the nose and throat and can cause breathing difficulties and serious complications if treatment is delayed. She identified sore throat, fever, weakness, swollen neck glands and a thick grey coating in the throat as common symptoms.
Another Health Educator, Mr Daniel Olafisoye, said vaccination remained the most effective protection against diphtheria, adding that vaccines were available at all primary healthcare centres in Ayobo-Ipaja.
He also urged residents to maintain good hygiene, cover their mouths when coughing, avoid close contact with infected persons and seek medical attention promptly when symptoms appear. The council said the campaign was part of its commitment to disease prevention and continuous public health education.
