Nigeria has assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, known as C-34, reinforcing its longstanding role in global peacekeeping and efforts to strengthen international security.
Nigeria’s UN Permanent Representative, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, assumed the position from his Canadian counterpart, David Lametti. Ibrahim said Nigeria would prioritise closing the gap between policies negotiated at UN headquarters and the realities faced by peacekeepers, civilians and host communities in conflict zones.
The envoy said Nigeria would also push for stronger accountability, effective peacekeeping, protection of civilians and greater field-based input in policymaking. He advocated increased participation of senior military leaders in the committee’s substantive deliberations and stressed that counter-terrorism operations must protect civilians and respect international law.
Ibrahim pledged to work with Canada, troop- and police-contributing countries, financial contributors, the UN Secretariat and host nations ahead of the committee’s 2027 substantive session. Lametti expressed Canada’s support for the new chairmanship, particularly on peacekeeping financing and initiatives that would give delegates firsthand insight into challenges confronting missions in the field.
