President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
Speaking at a Republican Party convention in Dallas, Trump said the payment would be known as the “Trump dividend” and would be made if Republicans maintain their majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives.
With more than 245 million adults in the United States, the proposal could cost more than $1 trillion by a rough estimate. The story notes that such a measure could face significant political and financial challenges in Congress.
Trump had previously proposed a $2,000 payment linked to U.S. tariff revenues but did not pursue the plan. U.S. voters will elect roughly one-third of the Senate and the entire House of Representatives on November 3.
