The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with Sightsavers, says it administered azithromycin to 1.1 million children during the fifth round of a statewide child-health intervention.
The exercise, conducted from December 15 to 21, 2025, was implemented under the SARMAAN project, which aims to improve child survival through mass administration of azithromycin. More than 90 per cent coverage was recorded during the exercise.
According to the state health educator, 9,885 settlements comprising 312,479 households across 213 political wards were visited by 2,277 teams. A sixth round of the exercise is scheduled for October 15 to 20, with more eligible children expected to be targeted.
Health officials say stakeholders will continue monitoring the safety and effectiveness of the intervention while working to strengthen community participation and public awareness.
