Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Tuesday September 8, said the appointment is temporary as it continues the search for a substantive coach for the senior women’s national team. Eguavoen, popularly known as “Cerezo”, will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nasarawa Amazons and a former coach of the Falconets.
The coaching crew will also include former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa and ex-Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf as assistant coach. Eguavoen previously led the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, while Danjuma has extensive experience with Nigeria’s women’s national teams.
The 10-time African champions will begin their Olympic qualifying campaign in the second round against Comoros, with the two-legged fixture scheduled for October 9 and 13 at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo. Nigeria received a bye into the round as one of Africa’s three highest-ranked teams.
The Falcons must progress through four knockout rounds to secure one of Africa’s two places at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. If they eliminate Comoros, they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco in the third round in February/March 2027.
