The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has confiscated several cartons and bags of suspected pirated books worth about 7 million naira during an enforcement operation at Garki Market in the Federal Capital Territory.
The commission said the raid, led by its Director of Operations, Femi Ajala, followed credible intelligence on the alleged storage and distribution of unauthorised copies of copyrighted publications. With support from armed police personnel, officials accessed the premises, evacuated the suspected pirated materials and sealed the store.
Ajala said the operation was part of the NCC’s renewed campaign against piracy, warning that illegal reproduction and distribution deprive authors, publishers and other copyright owners of legitimate income. He said the commission would investigate the source, ownership and distribution network of the seized publications and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
Among the titles recovered were Purple Hibiscus, The Magic of Thinking Big, New General Mathematics for Senior and Junior Secondary Schools, Stan Basic Science and Technology for Primary School, Learn Mathematics, New School Physics for Senior Secondary Schools and Essential Commerce for Senior Secondary Schools. The NCC urged the public and industry stakeholders to provide information that could help disrupt book piracy networks.
