Nigeria’s 18-year-old fencing prospect, Inkosi Brou, has won the 2026 FIE Satellite Sabre Viking Cup in Reykjavik, Iceland, adding another international medal to Nigeria’s growing fencing record.
Brou, who entered the tournament as the highest-ranked fencer, began his campaign in the round of 16 with a 15-4 victory over Hamid Al Maazmi of the UAE. He went on to defeat Sweden’s Kenneth Kong 15-11 in the quarter-finals and Czech Republic’s Lumir Kral 15-12 in the semi-finals.
In the final, Brou faced Iceland’s Andri Maateev before a partisan home crowd but remained composed to secure a dominant 15-6 victory and claim the title. His opponents during the tournament included fencers from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East.
The victory is Brou’s third international medal after Nigeria’s first global fencing medal, a silver at the 2024 World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Reykjavik, and a bronze at the 2025 African Junior Championships in Angola.
Currently Nigeria’s highest-ranked fencer, Brou is targeting qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he hopes to become the country’s first Olympic fencer.
