Wellington Clinics, Abuja, has denied involvement in alleged organ trafficking linked to the case of kidney donor Abubakar Hassan, saying its role was limited to providing medical facilities for a transplant procedure conducted by an independent specialist team.
The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director, Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, said in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that Wellington Clinics had a Memorandum of Understanding with Crown Medical and Kidney Transplant Services, led by nephrologist Dr Benjamin Oyimeh. He said the hospital provided an equipped operating theatre and medical environment under a facility-rental arrangement.
Ugwuanyi said the specialist team was responsible for donor recruitment, medical evaluation, donor-recipient compatibility, informed consent, ethical screening and other clinical and legal requirements. He also denied that the hospital participated in, facilitated, negotiated or benefited from any financial transaction involving the donor and recipient.
According to the hospital, Hassan underwent a left donor nephrectomy at Wellington Clinics on April 24, 2026, in a procedure led by Oyimeh, after required documentation, including a court affidavit of consent, was provided. Ugwuanyi said the hospital maintained that relevant provisions of the National Health Act 2014 were followed, while stressing that the circumstances surrounding the case and the legality of the donation remain under investigation.
