Cardinal John Onaiyekan has called for sustained support for books and literary works, saying they remain vital for preserving knowledge and human experiences despite the rapid growth of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Onaiyekan spoke in Abuja, on Saturday September 5, at the launch of a trilogy — Oderaa, Quaeso Manus and In Vinea Domini — written by Rev. Fr. Kenneth Agwu. He commended the author for documenting his experiences and reflections and urged Nigerians to support the publication and make the books accessible to young people and those unable to afford them.
Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, encouraged Nigerians, particularly young people, to cultivate reading and writing habits. He urged citizens to use technology as a complement to human reasoning while embracing honesty, hard work, gratitude and selfless service to society.
Agwu, the author, said the trilogy explores human purpose, the importance of support from others and service to humanity, drawing from his first decade as a priest. He said the books were also intended to encourage Nigerians to recognise positive contributions, demand accountability from leaders and develop the patience and discipline needed to build a better society.
