A fire outbreak has destroyed six buildings used as shops and storage facilities at the Babban Layi plastic shops section of Kofar Wambai Market in Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service said the incident occurred on Friday night, September 4, with a distress call received at about 9:43 p.m. Firefighters from several stations were immediately deployed and succeeded in containing the blaze before it spread to other parts of the busy market.
According to the Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, the affected two-storey buildings housed plastic shops, stores and temporary shops. The fire reportedly started on the upper floor before spreading to the first and ground floors, damaging shops and storage facilities.
Anas attributed the incident to a malfunction in a solar power system, while urging traders and residents to take fire prevention seriously. He advised them to install fire detectors and keep functional fire extinguishers readily available, particularly in markets and other densely populated areas.
