The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has inaugurated two technical committees on agricultural insurance and reinsurance to strengthen expertise, improve professional standards and promote best practices across the industry. This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday September 3. The move brings the association’s technical committees to 16.
NIA Director-General, Mrs Bola Odukale, said the committees were established in response to calls from stakeholders for dedicated platforms to address emerging issues in key insurance segments. She said the Agricultural Insurance Committee would focus on best practices and capacity building in underwriting and claims management, while the Reinsurance Committee would address industry practices and technical challenges in the segment.
Members of the committees were briefed on their responsibilities and expected contributions before elections were conducted. Leonard Okoroafor of AIICO Insurance Plc emerged Chairman of the Agricultural Insurance Committee, with Baron Omiji of Guinea Insurance as Deputy Chairman, while Adebayo Olukolajo of Leadway Assurance and Ndidi Olagunju of Industrial and General Insurance were elected Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively.
For the Reinsurance Committee, Helen Osadunkwu of Cornerstone Insurance Plc emerged Chairman, with Ochuko Efenure of Zenith Insurance as Deputy Chairman. Uwem Offong of NSIA Insurance and Otoikhila Godskingdom of Emple Insurance became Secretary and Assistant Secretary. The NIA said the initiative would strengthen technical capacity, encourage collaboration and support sustainable growth in Nigeria’s insurance sector.
