Three Nigerian authors have unveiled a new book, History and Lessons from the Nigerian Civil War (Chronologically Arranged), aimed at helping younger generations understand the 1967–1970 conflict and embrace peace, dialogue and national unity.
The authors — Chief Obioma Ikechi, Dr Uchenna Anioke and Chief James Egwuonwu — said the book presents a chronological account of the events surrounding the Civil War, from the political crises of 1966 to the end of the conflict in 1970. Anioke said the approach was designed to provide historical context while avoiding political distortion and encouraging reflection.
Representing Governor Peter Mbah, on Thursday September 3 at the presentation in Enugu, Commissioner for Environment, Prof. Sam Ugwu, described the publication as important documentation of the causes and socio-economic and political consequences of the war. He also called for stronger teaching of Nigerian history in primary and secondary schools.
Book reviewer Dr Ambrose Igbokwe said the publication would be particularly valuable to younger Nigerians who did not experience the war. He warned against romanticising conflict through films and social media, stressing that understanding history should help Nigerians make informed choices and prevent a repeat of past crises.
