The Kaduna State Government has launched an anti-rabies vaccination campaign for dogs and cats as part of efforts to prevent zoonotic diseases and protect public health across the state.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Murtala Dabo, said the campaign, flagged off in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area, also includes community sensitisation on zoonotic diseases and the disinfection of live bird markets to reduce the risk of avian influenza.
Dabo described rabies as a deadly but preventable disease and urged animal owners to vaccinate their pets, report animal bites promptly and alert authorities to unusual illnesses or deaths among birds. Poultry farmers and live bird market operators were also advised to strengthen biosecurity measures.
The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) is supporting the exercise with vaccines and logistics. Veterinary authorities said previous government vaccination campaigns had protected more than 850,000 cattle, 250,000 sheep and goats, 250,000 poultry and 5,000 dogs against various transboundary and zoonotic diseases.
