A survivor of a two-storey building collapse in Ilorin, Kwara State, says he lost five relatives in the tragedy and has appealed to the state government to support survivors receiving treatment and help the displaced family.
The building, located near Masalasi Gogoro in the Popo-Giwa area, collapsed shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday September 1, trapping eight people. A family member, Mallam Kudus Olarewaju, said his younger brother, a Staff Sergeant in the Nigerian Army, was rescued alive, while five relatives later died from injuries, according to information from the hospital.
However, casualty figures remain subject to reconciliation. The Kwara State Police Command confirmed two deaths, while the state Fire Service said four people were rescued alive and four others recovered from the rubble were suspected to have died.
The Fire Service said the affected section of the building was unsafe and unfit for habitation. It urged residents to report cracks and other structural warning signs, while advising property owners to ensure regular assessment and maintenance by qualified professionals.
