President Bola Tinubu has formally raised concerns over recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other nationals in South Africa before the African Union (AU).
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the AU Extraordinary Session in Luanda, Angola, Tinubu called for stronger continental action to protect the safety, dignity and rights of African nationals. He urged the AU to place the issue on the agenda of its 40th Ordinary Session scheduled for January 2027.
The President acknowledged South Africa’s right to enforce its immigration laws and its contributions to Africa’s development, but stressed that recurring attacks threaten African solidarity and peaceful coexistence.
On continental security, Tinubu backed the Luanda Action Plan and called for greater emphasis on conflict prevention, African-led solutions and stronger cooperation. He also warned that external military actors, mercenaries and diverted weapons could undermine Africa’s ability to manage its security challenges.
