The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has intercepted illicit drug consignments worth more than N6.2 billion in street value, including 47,200 pills of captagon and millions of opioid tablets.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, the captagon consignment was seized at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Aug. 22 following the arrest of a 49-year-old suspected cross-border drug trafficker. The drugs, valued at more than N1.5 billion, were concealed in blocks of locally produced bathing soap.
The agency also recovered more than 3.9 million tablets of Tramaking and Tapentadol from abandoned consignments at the Lagos airport, with a combined gross weight of about 2,787kg and estimated street value exceeding N4.6 billion. The consignments reportedly arrived from Bangladesh and Amsterdam and were retrieved after joint examination by NDLEA, Customs and other stakeholders.
In Rivers, NDLEA operatives recovered 237 grams of Colorado, 316 grams of cocaine and 10 grams of heroin from a fireproof safe during a raid in Port Harcourt. The agency also reported the seizure of 728kg of cannabis in Ondo, 341kg in another operation in the state and more than 176,000 assorted opioid pills in Delta.
NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations and directed personnel nationwide to sustain efforts against drug trafficking. He also urged continued drug-abuse prevention campaigns in schools, communities, workplaces and worship centres under the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.
