Nollywood film Properties of the Gods will hit cinemas on Sept. 4, with producers dedicating the theatrical release to late Nigerian music icon and actress Onyeka Onwenu, who featured in the movie before her death.
Producer Joseph Okechukwu said the release date would be observed as “Onyeka Onwenu Day”, with a night of tributes scheduled for Sept. 3. The production team will also pay condolence visits to the families of Onwenu and late actress Cynthia Okereke, who were both part of the film.
Okechukwu said the movie’s earlier premiere was suspended following the deaths of the two actresses, noting that it would have been inappropriate to hold an elaborate celebration while their families were mourning. He said funds originally budgeted for the premiere would instead support the condolence activities.
Directed by Uzodinma Okpechi and Okey Oku, Properties of the Gods explores the long-standing Osu caste system in Igbo society and its impact on discrimination and social relationships. The star-studded cast includes Pete Edochie, Zack Orji, Hilda Dokubo, Enyinna Nwigwe, Jennifer Eliogu and Onyeka Onwenu in one of her final screen appearances.
