The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has mobilised two contractors to reconstruct a 15.4-kilometre failed section of the Benin-Sapele Expressway in Delta State, following complaints over the deplorable condition of the major highway.
Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Chiedu Ebie, said during the flag-off at Amukpe Roundabout on Friday that the intervention followed a directive from President Bola Tinubu. He said the two contractors would work from opposite ends of the affected corridor to accelerate completion and reduce the prolonged traffic gridlock experienced by motorists.
NDDC Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku, said the road’s poor condition had caused significant economic losses, with vehicles conveying goods sometimes trapped in traffic for weeks. The project, being handled by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Ronin and Fan Limited, will cover approximately 15.4 kilometres and be executed with rigid concrete pavement.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, commended the intervention, describing it as a major boost to connectivity and economic activities. The NDDC said it would ensure the project is executed according to specification, while stakeholders called for similar interventions on other major road corridors in the state.
