Indian players dominated the 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics, winning three of the five titles at the tournament held in Lagos.
Tankara Talasila claimed the men’s singles title after defeating compatriot and training partner, Hmar Laithazuala, in a keenly contested final. The Panda sisters, Rutaparna and Swetaparna, also defeated fellow Indians Kwripriya Selvam and Simpran Singhi to win the women’s doubles.
India completed its three-title haul in the mixed doubles, where Dhuv Ramat and Katie Maneesha defeated compatriots Sathwik Kanapuram and Radhike Sharma. The UAE’s 19-year-old Prakriti Bharath won the women’s singles, while Thailand’s Thanawin Madee and Madee Pongsakom emerged champions in the men’s doubles.
Badminton Federation of Nigeria board member Lekan Abdul praised the organisers, athletes, sponsors and the National Institute for Sports for contributing to the successful tournament. Talasila, who was competing in Africa for the first time, said winning in Nigeria was special despite facing a close friend and training partner in the final.
