The Federal Government has stressed the importance of detecting cancer early, saying the stage at which the disease is diagnosed can significantly influence treatment options and the chances of a successful outcome.
Dr Uchechukwu Nwokwu, National Coordinator of the National Cancer Control Plan, explained that cancer progresses through four stages, depending on how far abnormal cells have spread. Stage One is confined to its point of origin, while Stage Four occurs when the disease has spread to distant organs, a process known as metastasis.
Nwokwu said some early-stage cancers could potentially be cured with surgery alone, while Stage Two and Three cancers may require combinations of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Advanced cancers often require more complex, systemic treatment because they may affect different parts of the body.
He urged Nigerians to seek medical attention promptly when they notice unusual symptoms and follow appropriate screening and diagnostic recommendations. He said early diagnosis enables doctors to determine the stage of the disease and select the most suitable treatment, while stressing that cancer treatment should be tailored to each patient and the biological characteristics of the disease.
