Top-seeded players have secured their places in the women’s singles quarter-finals at the ninth Lagos International Badminton Classics, with second seed Disha Gupta of the United States leading the charge.
Gupta booked her place in the last eight with a straight-games 21-10, 21-10 victory over Nigeria’s Naomi Tanko and will next face Myssha Khan of the United Arab Emirates. Third seed Petra Maixnerova of the Czech Republic also advanced after defeating India’s Jameet Kaur and will meet Spain’s Ania Setien.
Fourth seed Prakriti Bharath of the UAE overcame compatriot Sakshi Kurbkhelgi 21-14, 13-21, 21-10 in a tough encounter, setting up a quarter-final clash with Prasha Bonam. Hungary’s seventh seed Agnes Korosi also progressed after fighting back to defeat UAE’s Mia Sundaparadian 16-21, 21-16, 21-17.
India’s Surya Tamiri produced the tournament’s biggest upset by eliminating top seed Azzahra of Azerbaijan 21-13, 21-18. Tamiri will face Korosi in the quarter-finals at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Institute for Sports, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, where the competition is scheduled to end on Saturday.
