The Enugu State Government has commended women farmers supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) for their growing contributions to food production, processing and food security in the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialisation, Mr Patrick Ubru, gave the commendation during the 2026 International Year of Women Farmers celebration in Enugu. The United Nations designated 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer to recognise women’s vital role in agri-food systems, nutrition and economic resilience.
The State Project Coordinator of VCDP, Dr Edward Isiwu, said more than 80 per cent of the programme’s beneficiaries in Enugu were women participating in various agricultural value chains. He also commended Gov. Peter Mbah for supporting farmers through counterpart funding for agricultural programmes, noting that the VCDP was focused on strengthening food security and making farming more profitable.
Women beneficiaries said the programme had transformed their livelihoods by providing access to inputs, equipment, logistics and opportunities to move from subsistence farming into commercial production and processing. Beneficiaries highlighted support including tricycles, fertiliser, herbicides and improved cassava stems, while awards were presented to outstanding women at the event.
